A Brief History of Winston-SalemFounded in 1766, the town of Salem became the home of German-speaking Moravians and a major commercial and religious center in North Carolina. In Salem the church governed many aspects of community life, both spiritual and economic. Both European and African American men and women led daily lives centered on work and worship. Salem was a church-governed town until 1849, when it sold part of its land to the new county seat, a town called Winston. In 1913, Salem merged with neighboring Winston to become Winston-Salem. Arts and CultureWinston-Salem, City of the Arts, formed its Arts Council in 1949, and is currently ranked # 3 in the nation for per capita support of the arts. Based in Winston-Salem, the North Carolina School of the Arts is the only residential, state-supported school for the arts in the U.S., producing many of today's and tomorrow's stars on the screen and stage. |
